RWC / safety inspection

Cost – $110

A safety certificate (aka road worthy certificate) is issued to a vehicle once it passes a minimum safety standard inspection as deemed by QLD Transport, and can only be issued by a QLD Transport approved inspection station. A safety certificate covers basic things that could affect the safe operation of a vehicle such as;

  • Tyres
  • Leaks
  • Brakes
  • Steering
  • Suspension
  • SRS
  • Windscreens
  • Lights
  • Etc

At East Coast Customs, we are approved to provide safety inspections for light vehicles up to 4.5t GVM.

A safety certificate offers buyers of a vehicle better protection to ensure a vehicle being offered for disposal is safe. In QLD, a safety certificate is valid for 2 months or 2000kms, whichever comes first.

A safety inspection takes approx 45 – 60 minutes, and upon successful completion the certificate is issued immediately. Should a vehicle fail a safety inspection, the owner of the vehicle has 14 days to rectify failed items and return for reassessment (at no extra charge).

It must be noted however, that a safety certificate is not a complete and comprehensive mechanical inspection.

Scan tool

Cost – $88

Using the latest SNAP ON diagnostic scan tool, our technicians are able to connect to your vehicles OBD (on board diagnostic) port and extract a plethora of past and present vehicle data and information, to get a real time snapshot of your vehicles health.

In doing this they are able to read and clear diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s) and engine check / warning lights (CEL / MIL), reset service indicators, operate BCM functions and analyze vehicle information and systems in real time to accurately diagnose and interpret all types of vehicle problems and information in a timely manner.

Oscilloscope

Cost – $110

Using our in-house oscilloscope, we have access to one of the most powerful instruments in our arsenal. An oscilloscope has the ability to display and analyse the waveform of electronic signals.

The features and unfiltered signals you see with an oscilloscope are features you cannot otherwise see – and allows our technicians to determine highly specialized faults in the most obscure of circumstances, by inspecting the frequency, time scale, and waveform of the desired signal and correlating it against known working and functional data collected over the years to determine a fault.

Dyno test

Cost – $110

With our own in house Dyno Dynamics dynamometer, we are able to test, inspect, and diagnose a large number of conditions or situations that simply cannot be done safely on the road in real time. We are able to simulate any and all road conditions in house in a controlled environment, to accurately record any information or diagnose any faults.

Our fully trained technicians can test your vehicle for power, torque, afr, ignition advance, fuel pressure at any given rpm, load or speed, and provide you with complete graphing and information print outs of all acquired data.

Speedo test

Cost – $88

On our in house dynamometer, we can hold and record speedometer information in real time under all conditions. This is useful for recalibrating speedometers after modifications, such as larger wheels, different driveline components, and we are also able to print off a speedo calibration report for your vehicle.

Smoke / Leak detection test

Cost – $66

Our in house smoke leak detection machine has the ability to test for and find even the most miniscule leakages in almost any low-pressure environment.

Using the smoke leak tester, we are able to pump controlled levels of smoke into almost any test area, seal the system, and watch for any signs of leakage. In doing this, we are able to detect even the smallest leaks, impossible to find with the human eye.

The most common use for the smoke / leak detection test is to find leaks in inlet manifolds, throttle bodies, intercooler piping, exhaust systems, gaskets and o-rings, EVAP systems, brake boosters, and under dash leaks, all of which can lead to numerous other costly operating problems that would otherwise continue undetected.

Battery load test

Cost – $11

Using a carbon pile battery load tester, we are able to test the condition of your vehicles battery and charging system. The main advantage of this test is that we are able to test the battery under significant load, in order to get a true indication of its health.

Many batteries may pass a generic voltage test, but fail when tested under load. During our carbon pile load test, battery is tested under load and therefore early detection of inherent problems are detected before they cause any issues (aka a battery may be fine during light summer use, but a load test may indicate that it is insufficient for extended use or use in winter conditions, indicating the need for replacement before an imminent failure leaves someone with a car that wont start.)

Ignition coil test

Cost – $11 per coil (+ labour for remove / refit if required)

Our in house ignition coil test machine has the ability to test all forms of ignition coils under varying loads and conditions, OUTSIDE of the vehicle. This is the perfect way to diagnose a faulty ignition component; whether it be a to highlight a faulty coil, or to rule out the coil as the culprit in the case of an ignition system issue.

During this test, our technician’s can fit individual ignitions coils to our test machine and test them under a variety of conditions for spark quality, strength, and leakage to diagnose potential faults.

Bore scope

Cost – $55

Using the latest SNAP ON bore scope, our technicians are able to take an in depth view inside cylinder bores and other components that are impossible to see under normal circumstances, to inspect for potential problems.

Using a telescopic camera, our technician is able to view inside a cylinder bore for closer inspection of cylinder walls, pistons, valves, and other areas. The images are then projected onto an LCD screen for crystal clear viewing, and are also able to be saved as image or video files for later inspection. The bore scope can also be used to inspect hard to access areas such as behind dashes, under inlet manifolds etc.

Exhaust back pressure

Cost – $125

With the exhaust back pressure test, our technicians hook up the back pressure test kit to the vehicle’s exhaust system, and are then able to view the amount of back pressure present in the exhaust in real time, as well as graph relevant data (if tested on the dyno).

This test is used in diagnosis of exhaust system blockages or to highlight whether the exhaust system flows enough gas for the current system. Block catalytic converters and mufflers can be easily seen due to an abnormal increase in exhaust system backpressure, as well as when a vehicle’s exhaust breathing needs become to great for the current system.

Fuel Pressure Test

Cost – $55

The correct fuel pressure is a vital component in ensuring efficient and reliable operation of a vehicle. With a fuel pressure test, our technicians are able to tee into the vehicles fuel system and measure the fuel pressure of the vehicle, to ensure it is in line with manufacturer or chosen specifications.

The fuel pressure test is an excellent way of diagnosing failing or unsuitable fuel pumps, blocked fuel filters, faulty check valves, and other components critical in the fuel delivery process.

Power steering system flush (stage 1)

Cost – $110

The power steering fluid in our car can slowly degrade over time as it is exposed to the heat generated as a byproduct of power steering assistance. In turn, the fluid can lose its lubricity, which can in turn lead increased wear in components such as our power steering pump and rack. If left unattended, varnish and sludge deposits can also build up causing a decrease in performance and increased component wear.

Our stage 1 power steering system flush involves us adding a detergent to the existing power steering fluid to help break down any varnish and sludge deposits and improves system circulation.  Once this has been achieved, our technician then completely drains the existing power steering fluid from the vehicle and replaces it with fresh fluid in line with manufacturer specifications.

Engine vacuum test

Cost – $44

Engine vacuum is created during the pistons down stroke on the intake cycle as it draws fresh air into the combustion chamber. The amount of vacuum created during this process is a great indicator towards engine health and associated issues.

During a vacuum test, our technician will measure engine vacuum under a variety of different conditions, and analyze the collected results to determine the state of engine health and operating condition.

Compression test

Cost – from $55

Engine compression is the amount of pressure the piston exerts on the air / fuel mixture before ignition. The amount of pressure generated is a good indicator of engine health, and a lack of pressure in any cylinder can cause significant operational faults and symptoms.

With a compression test, our technician removes the spark plugs in the vehicle, and tests each cylinder one by one for compression pressure. The results can then be compared to manufacturer specs to determine and pinpoint potential issues, or to indicate required further testing.

Leak down test

Cost – from $88

A leak down test is a follow up test to a compression test – if a compression test indicates a lack of compression in any cylinder, the leak down test can be used to pinpoint the source of the leakage / lost compression, as well as the severity.

During a leak down test, our technician seals each cylinder at top dead centre (TDC) to ensure all valves are closed. Compressed air is then introduced into the cylinder and the amount of “leakage” is then measured to determine severity, and traced to determine “causality”.

Wheel balance

Cost – $15 per tyre

Wheel balancing refers to the distribution of mass within a wheel and tyre combination. When a wheel rotates during driving, asymmetries in mass can cause ride disturbances such as hopping, wobbling or shaking.

During a wheel balance, our technician fits your wheel and tyre combo to our dynamic balancing machine, and sensors measure the force of unbalance as the tyre rotates. The technician then fits balance weights where necessary to ensure correct balance and operation.

Tyre rotation

Cost – $10 per tyre

Tyre rotation involves moving tyres from one position to another to ensure even tyre wear. Even tyre wear is desirable to maintain consistent performance and to extend tyre life.

Using special tyre fitting machines, our technicians will remove the tyre from your rim, and then refit to another depending on request and specification. This also includes general tyre fittings services on loose rims.

Cooling system flush (stage 1)

Cost – from $330

Your vehicles cooling system is responsible for controlling the heat produced by the engine as a byproduct of combustion and power production. The caveat to this is that the cooling system needs to be clean to cool efficiently, yet over time your vehicle’s cooling system can build up solid deposits, sludge, rust, scale and residue that can clog the system and lead to poor performance, component failure and costly repairs (did you know that cooling system failures are the leading cause of mechanical breakdown).

Our stage one cooling system flush involves our technician introducing a special chemical into your cooling system to help break down the existing harmful deposits. The system is then completely drained, then the thermostat removed and the entire system reverse flushed to remove all traces of existing coolant and deposits. The vehicle is then refilled with fresh coolant, the system bled of air, and tested to manufacturer specifications.

Cooling system flush (stage 2)

Cost – from $440

Our stage 2 cooling system flush follows the same procedures as the stage 1 flush, however includes the added service of a professional radiator flush. During the stage 2 flush, the radiator is remove, upper and lower tanks removed and cleaned, the core tubes pressure flushed and fins checked, then refitted with new seals and a full report.

Carbon cleaning

Due to the poor quality of fuels used in Australia, everyday driving and normal operation will inevitably cause our engines to develop a build up of sludge, carbon deposits, gum and varnish.

This build up has many detrimental effects, such as loss of power, poor fuel economy, rough idling and driving, poor throttle response, hard starting – even pinging and detonation!

At East Coast Customs, we have recognized the importance of keeping carbon build up under control and have 4 different versions / stages of our carbon cleaning, to suit all applications and budgets. Through these different methods, we can ensure that the carbon deposits and build up can successfully be remove from injectors, fuel rails, valves, manifolds, throttle bodies, piston tops etc to ensure improved operation.

Intake manifold and throttle body carbon clean (stage 1)

Cost – $55

With our stage 1 intake manifold and throttle body carbon clean, our technician introduces a powerful blend of solvents and chemicals into the inlet manifold and throttle body with the vehicle stationary. The solvents then begin to foam up inside the throttle body and intake manifold, slowly breaking down the carbon build up. The vehicle is then started and ran, with more product introduced to further the cleaning process. The broken down carbon is then harmlessly expelled out the exhaust of the vehicle, with the final results being a smoother, cleaner, more efficiently operating vehicle.

Intake manifold and throttle body carbon clean (stage 2)

Cost – $165

Our stage 2 intake manifold and throttle body carbon clean takes things a step further. The vehicle is placed onto our in house dynamometer, and is also retrofitted with our special carbon clean tool. This tool then introduces the carbon cleaning chemicals into the vehicles air stream whilst the dyno operator places the vehicle through a specific load sequencing procedure to ensure optimal results and cleaning are achieved above those possible via regular methods. By doing this, we are able to ensure oil temperatures rise above sedentary road going temperatures, ensuring contaminants are burnt off and the detergent action of the engine oil is used to full effect.

Fuel system carbon clean

Cost – $165

Our fuel system carbon clean is similar to our Intake manifold and throttle body carbon clean (stage 2), however the chemical is introduced through the fuel system, as opposed to via the air stream pre throttle body. This system provides the added benefit of cleaning the vehicles fuel injectors and rail, which over time also become clogged with residues, manifesting as a reduction in fuel flow, poor spray pattern, and lean operation, all to coincide with the already ever present carbon build up in the manifold and engine.

In this treatment, the technician isolates and disables the vehicles fuel system and is hooked up to our fuel system carbon clean treatment machine. From here, a fuel system carbon cleaner is introduced to the vehicle in place of the factory fuel system – the vehicle is run entirely off our special cleaning solvents. The vehicle is once again run through a specific loading sequence on our dynamometer, in order to efficiently clean the injector and fuel rail, as well as the manifold, valves and pistons.

Complete carbon clean

Cost – $250

Our complete carbon clean combines both our Intake manifold and throttle body carbon clean (stage 2) with out Fuel System carbon clean for the ultimate in engine cleaning and revitalisation. This carbon clean attacks the carbon from all angles and all systems, and ensures the most efficient and effective results.
